I want to share with you some of the things that I have picked up (and will continue to learn) along my journey through working in sales so far. To maybe help you in achieving whatever it is you want to achieve. I thought that a good place to start is by outlining what you what to get out of it all! So here goes my first post...
Success is defined by achieving an aim or goal, therefore to be successful you must have a goal (or a few of them if you are like me.)
In countless lectures throughout my degree, and even in recent training - I am constantly told to create SMART goals.
SMART, like most terms in business theory and training packages - is an anagram!! It stands for the following:
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Attainable
R - Relevant
T - Time Bound
SMART goals are for average achievers. If you think like everyone, act like everyone then you are going to achieve what everyone achieves. Some people are happy with that - and I wish I could be. If you are - then maybe this blog isn't for you. If you aren't and want to achieve more - be more successful and attain goals that are bigger than SMART - give this a try.
If you want to be successful you need to avoid SMART, think big. Really big.
Try to scare yourself in your pursuits. Don't aim to get a job - aim to get the job, be promoted and have enough money to buy a house. Don't aim to make £30k this year - triple it.
By doing this you are setting your margins further than what you are told you can achieve. this means that if you truly want whatever your goal is - then you are willing to work for it. As your target is considerably higher than everyone else - your actions taken to attain it must be bigger too! Which will lead onto my next post - The 2 A's of achieving.
I will leave you with the following thoughts:
Richard Branson
At 16 years old Branson started his first business: A magazine called Student. He now owns over 400 companies, is the 4th richest citizen in the UK and has a net worth of over $4.6bn!
If Richard hadn't of thought big, bigger than the average 16 year old - do you think he would be in the same situation? If his aim was to just get the paper round that most teens have...
Martin Luther King
He fought for the rights of African-Americans, which revolved around the banning of racial segregation, led the Birmingham campaign, whose aim was promoting their civil rights and, finally, he was instrumental in organizing the largest gathering in Washington's history in March, 1963. Martin Luther was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, at least fifty honorary degrees and other several significant awards
If Martin thought like those before him and accepted the segregation do you think he would have achieved everything above?
The Wright Brothers
These guys are famous for flight! The brothers made the first successful airplane in 1903 and now have the "Master Pilot Award" named after them.
Possibly the most separated target from what was thought to be "SMART". These guys defied gravity by having a huge goal. Imagine if they hadn't!
Think big. Write down 3 (or more if you like!) enormous goals for yourself. Make them relevant to you, and something that you are willing to work at to achieve.
